He Saved Me: A Goodbye I Never Expected
Share
I never imagined the last time I saw my dog alive would be like that.
It was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was very sick—constant fever, chills, relentless coughing. I had been bedridden for days, barely able to eat or even lift my head. Every moment was a haze of discomfort and fatigue.
But through it all, my dog never left my side.
He would curl up quietly beside my bed, sometimes resting his head on my arm, sometimes just watching me as if making sure I was still breathing. He never demanded attention. He didn’t bark. He just stayed. Silent, loyal, and unwavering.
Then, one day, I hit a breaking point. My condition got worse, and my family made the decision to take me to the hospital. We were all preparing to leave, and in the chaos, my dog was supposed to stay home by himself—just for a little while.
But something in him changed that day.
As we opened the door to leave, he suddenly grew frantic—restless in a way we had never seen. He paced, whimpered, and tried to get out. We gently pulled him back in, thinking he was just distressed to see us go. The first time, he managed to dash out toward the road, and my mother chased after him, managing to scoop him up and carry him back.
But he wasn’t done.
The second time, he slipped out so quickly none of us had time to react. Before we could stop him, he ran straight toward the street—and was hit by a passing car.
He died instantly.
We were devastated. There are no words that could describe the silence that fell over us. My mother dropped to her knees. I remember crying without making a sound. My family stood frozen in shock. We didn’t even go to the hospital that day. No one could think clearly. Nothing else mattered.
But then something strange happened.
That night, my fever broke. My coughing calmed. Over the next few days, I started to recover—faster than any of us had expected. My mother told me later, through tear-filled eyes, “I think... he made a deal with someone up there. He took the sickness for you.”
I don’t know if that’s true. But in my heart, I believe it.
He was more than a pet. He was family. He was my protector, even in his final moments.
We buried him in our backyard, in his favorite spot near the cherry tree. I ordered a personalized headstone for him, with his name and photo engraved, and a special urn for his ashes. It brought me a small piece of peace—something tangible to hold onto. Something to help me honor the bravery and love of my best friend.
His name is Max, and he is a Golden Retriever.
And I knew I had to share his story.
That’s why I wrote this. I emailed it to support@mypetpersonal.com, and with their help, it’s now here, shared with all of you. I hope you’ll remember him too. He was a brave dog. The bravest.
